"We want to thank the members of the Writers Guild of America East, especially we are very proud to be working here in the East. We shot, and write, and post our show in Long Island City. We spend 12, 14, 15 hours a day in Long Island City… Uh, I don’t know if you have been to Long Island City, it truly is the meatus of the five boroughs. It’s sort of an horrible place but interesting things come out of it.
Miss McCain said earlier tonight, sort of said that she hoped that the television writers wouldn’t feel diminished to follow the classier portions of the evening but I assure you we don’t feel that way, partly because, network television is seen by so few people anymore that is almost as precious as live theater, and also because this staff, this band of miscreants and nerds and gay people, takes their job as seriously and work as hard as any writer in any medium and if you don’t believe me I will videotape at the next time Robert Carlock and I argue for 20 minutes about whether or not to put “a period” inside a quotation mark or outside of the quotation mark, it is torturous.
Uh, four years ago we were here and we lost the Award For New Show to Ugly Betty, and now we lament the loss of our neighbors in Long Island City, Ugly Betty and we’re never supposed to survive four years ago and at this point four years in, I think like we realize that, uh, our special moment may not last forever, so we’re very grateful to have at this time, and thank you very much.” [x]
